A friend of ours is a photographer and required a specialized filter adapter for his 35mm camera. We told him "We have the technology to make you a filter adapter." and sent him out to get a 4" diameter piece of T6061 aluminum for us to whittle away on with the CNC lathe. Taking measurements from the camera, the part design and tool paths required to machine the part were created in Mastercam.
It was nail biting time while starting to enlarge the bore with a boring bar that was not too much smaller than the bore. Nothing like not being able to see eminent tool crashes…
Accurate modelling of the tool, stock and part paid off. Just as there were no tool crashes in the simulation, there were no crashes on the actual part. Here is the finished ring.
Here is the ring mounted on the camera with the filter bracket and filter.
